Brady Succeeds, Browns Fail

Brady Quinn played as well as anyone could have expected in his first start last night. Unfortunately, the defense played as bad as anyone could have expected and the Browns blew another fourth quarter lead and lost to the Broncos, 34-30.

Now, I know there's some DA fans out there who are going to say that this is the same thing that happened on Sunday when DA shouldered much of the blame when the Browns blew a fourth quarter lead and lost to the Ravens.

WRONG! This is NOT the same situation. Defensively, it is — the Browns have serious problems on defense. Offensively, it is not the same at all. While DA and the offense collapsed along with the defense against the Ravens, Brady and the offense kept the Browns in this game until the end.

Bottom line is, when your offense scores 30 points, you should win the game (for the record, DA's offense did not score 27 points and lose, it scored 20 points and lost ... Cribbs' kick return accounted for the other 7 points).

Brady Quinn played well. He was efficient. He was commanding. He was decisive. He sustained drives. He made plays. The Browns lost despite his playing well. The Browns lost because a stupid penalty, a fumble and because their defense is terrible.

That's not to say DA didn't suffer from the same ineptitude from the rest of the team when he was the starter. Brady, however, was still able to lead the offense to a fourth quarter comeback drive to regain the lead. He just didn't get the help to do it twice.

The big difference between the two, though, is in the numbers:

DA vs. Ravens
17-of-33, 219 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
51.5 completion percentage
80.24 QB rating

Brady vs. Broncos
23-of-35, 239 yards, 2TDs, 0 INT
65.7 completion percentage
104.3 QB rating

Still, in the end the Browns lost. They lost at home, with a fourth quarter lead. I still believe — and last night it was reinforced — Brady Quinn gives the Browns the best chance to win games. Unfortunately, the defense gives them the best chance to lose.

  1. I do think the Browns Offense worked better with Brady. He is much more mobile compared to stand-still DA. He will be able to complete a much higher % by being able to roll out when a defender is coming on a blitz.

Winslow looked like Brady's 'Shark' last night. Let these two work together the rest of the year and you will have an unstoppable combination in the future. Same for Braylon and Brady.

What happened to the Defense? Two years ago Todd Grantham was head coaching material and the Browns Defense was on the rise. Last season into this season it has fallen to a alltime low. Mel Tucker is an idiot. He has the DBs in the wrong coverage. He leaves slowfooted Andre Davis in there to many plays. Jackson get knocked on his ass by small runningbacks. Why can't our LBs make plays behind the line of scrimmage like the Steelers and Ravens LBs do?

    Off season
    Leave Offense alone including Chud
    Get rid of Mel Tucker
    Sign shutdown corner
Sign and draft two Middle Linebackers.
    Most important offseason move
FIRE ROMEO!!!!!!!! The guy is not head coach material!!!

  2. I'd argue both quarterbacks give the Browns an equal chance to win games. We knew coming into this season they were rotten on the corners defensively, and that should have been addressed. As much as I like Phil Savage, that rests on his plate. They fell in love with Brandon McDonald, as they do with every defenders who has ONE big game. If they were truly a contender like they thought, they would have taken a shot at a corner like Ty Law just to have a veteran presence that would have still been an upgrade. Lack of moves like that is why they're 3-6.

Now back to the quarterback situation. Many forget Quinn probably would have taken over last year if the Browns weren't contending. Since they aren't now, you have to start Quinn. They just needed to do this sooner, when Anderson was bickering with Lawrence Vickers and Braylon Edwards.

  3. Brady did well in his debut. He's a modern day Atlas with the self-imposed weight of the team on his shoulders. (Check out my latest comical entry at Brady Quinn org site.) But that is very typical Brady. He's consistent with that self-flagellation of his ever since Notre Dame.

Derek's in the past - we now have a brighter future. (Unless, GASP, Brady gets injured.) Of course, it would have been nice had it happen sooner.

If you want to harp about past issues then it lies with Brady and Tom Condon for holding out last year during contract negotiations. (More so Tom Condon since Brady let him handle all the bids and talks.) It may have been, "...the uglier side of the business," as Brady had said himself, but it also cost us time.

He's young. It's only going to get better. If, and when, Romeo goes, it may very well be great.

    Nice entry Pete.

and sign the petition to get Bill Cowher next year.

The fans helped get DA benched. Maybe we can get Romeo fired!
