Shanahan Suddenly Available

Following in the footsteps of the Browns, Jets and Lions, another NFL team has fired its head coach and suddenly, a new candidate emerges.

Yesterday, the Denver Broncos fired Mike Shanahan after 14 seasons and two Super Bowl rings.

In my opinion, Shanahan should move directly to the top of the list of available head coaches ... and should be strongly considered by Randy Lerner and the Browns.

He's still a great head coach. His downfall in Denver was due mostly to his personnel decisions as vice president of football operations. Since given that title, the team has gone downhill talent-wise, but not coaching-wise.

To hire Shanahan as the head coach could be a good fit for the Browns. But, we'd still need a GM. Which brings us back to, perhaps, Lerner's biggest decision: Chicken or the Egg? Which comes first, the GM or the Head Coach?

Whatever direction Lerner continues to take this search, I believe Shanahan should be strongly considered.

  1. Yes, Mike Shanahan would be great! However, I wouldn't be surprised of he wants to take some time off, though.

  2. I think they should hire Pioli right away and get his input on the coach. We don't know if Shanahan will work with Pioli. I do not want Mangini! Kirk Ferenz would be good! If they hire Mel Tucker I might be done as will the Browns! He is being interviewed this weekend.

  3. I just hope we hire someone with head coaching experience instead of a coordinator. Also it would be nice if the candidate with head coaching experience had a good record as a head coach which would rule out Mangini.

Shanahan is the obvious choice and we should throw ridiculous money at him. He's won SUPER BOWLS as a HEAD COACH! That isn't something we could say for many of the former browns coaches or current candidates.

Also even though I am against hiring a coordinator I am intrigued with McDaniels only because he knows the history of the Browns and would probably be more passionate than most coaches because he's felt our pain. Also it helps he is a JCU alum and another notable JCU alum and hall of fame coach was Don Shula. Just to connect the reference McDaniels could be the next Don Shula? It's possible but I still hope for Shanahan.

  4. They only interviewed Mel Tucker because of the Rooney rule. Randy Lerner isn't dumb enough to hire him (i think?). It looks like Eric "Lil Romeo" Mangini has emerged as the leading candidate, and Shanahan is not in consideration.
