Randy Lerner wasted no time, that's for sure. Mangini was the first candidate he interviewed and I can't help but wonder what Mangini could have possibly said in his interview to win Lerner over so emphatically. As I've stated previously, I was not on board with the idea of Mangini as the next head coach of the Browns. He seems like he'll be just another Romeo Crennel. But, we'll see. I am, of course, still a Browns fan and if Mangini is our new head coach, then I'll have to be supportive of him.
It does baffle me, I'm not going to lie. I mean, are qualified head coaching candidates in such short supply that Lerner is content to hire the first person he interviews? Also, I'm bewildered that he'd hire a head coach before he hires a GM.
All I can right now, while we wait for Lerner to hire a GM, is hope that Mangini turns out to be one of those NFL coaches that finds great success in his second head coaching job in the NFL after a failed first stint.
I think I can speak for most Browns fans when I say, "Welcome aboard, Coach Mangini ... don't screw it up!"
Check out the new Blawg Pound poll and let me know what you think about our new head coach. Go Browns!

The Browns since returning to the NFL in 99 has the 2nd worst win percentage of all NFL teams. We've had awful coaches with NO NFL head coaching experience. Now we're supposed to get excited over Mangini cause he was an NFL head coach? He was 23-25 as a head coach!! He's a loser of a coach.
This guy stands no chance of turning this team around and we'll be looking for another coach in 3 years guaranteed. I hope I'm wrong and I'll admit I loved Crennel when we got him and he was a flop so I'm hoping Mangini proves me wrong.
Lerners abilities as an owner have to be in question. I know it's his team and he has the money to do what he wants but for the sake of Cleveland fans he needs help.
I am continually baffled on how this team conducts business, for example the press conference. I didn't know if our spokesmodel Quinn would be hosting it, or if the Browns would pick someone to be the face of the organization.
Maybe Lerner should just (a) speak from behind the curtain, or (b) prerecord his message and have it played.
Let's hope we get a GM who can speak in public and answer/blow off questions.
I completely agree that they should have hired a GM before a coach. That is right on target, because they lost the chance at an excellent candidate today according to ESPN - Tom Heckert, the GM of the Eagles. Not only is he a Fraternity brother of mine and yours, but he has a connection to Ohio.
The other thing you write though, that Mangini had a failed first stint, is wrong in my opinion... He took the Jets to the playoffs in his first season, had a very disappointing second season, and had them back on the brink of the playoffs this season even with Favre leading the league in interceptions...
I guess my question is: how can we be bashing a guy who has taken a team to the playoffs when the Browns have yet to be in the playoffs since their return to the league? Give the guy a chance in Cleveland before you lambaste his credentials...
I am completely with you though in that he should not have been hired before a GM, and they probably should have interviewed other candidates to see who else was out there.
Bruce,
I know the Browns have been bad, but please let's not forget that "magical" 2002 season when Butch Davis took us to the playoffs (a 36-33 loss to the Steelers in the Wild Card round).
