Trimming the Fat

The Browns waived 18 players yesterday, and terminated the contracts of five others in order to trim their roster to 52 -- one below the NFL mandated 53.

The players who were waived are:
  • FB Charles Ali
  • DB Brandon Anderson
  • QB Richard Bartel
  • DB Tra Battle
  • LB Beau Bell
  • OL Branndon Braxton
  • LB Titus Brown
  • OL Dustin Fry
  • DL Adam Hoppel
  • WR Paul Hubbard
  • RB Chris Jennings
  • WR Lance Leggett
  • OL Pat Murray
  • R Jordan Norwood
  • OL Kurt Quarterman
  • DL Brian Schaefering
  • OL Isaac Sowells
  • DL Santonio Thomas
And those players whose contracts were terminated are:
  • DB Hamza Abdullah
  • RB Noah Herron
  • DB Corey Ivy
  • WR David Patten
  • TE Aaron Walker
Now, with one free spot, the Browns combed the waiver wire today and were awarded four more players. They are:
  • DB Marquis Floyd from Seattle
  • RB Cedric Peerman from Baltimore
  • DB DeAngelo Smith from Dallas
  • OL Phil Trautwein from St. Louis
Of course, if you've done the math, you know the Browns had to waive three more players to make room for these guys. The three that were waived today are:
  • LB Marcus Benard
  • OL Corey Hilliard
  • DB Bret Lockett
You got all that? The roster currently includes 10 linebackers, 11 defensive backs, seven rookie draft choices, and our two undrafted rookies, LB Marcus Benard and DB Bret Lockett, were waived today.

The biggest surprise to me was the termination of Patten's contract. I mean, didn't they make it out to be a pretty big deal when we went out and got him last spring? Oh well, I guess you have to cut somewhere.

Go Browns!
